Players, Parents, Coaches Meetings
Player Notes
* Team is family, respect each other and the coaches
* Respect and focus for the game of hockey (Other Players, Coaches, Refs)
* Players need to communicate with coaches. Playing time, position, bulling, etc. And know when to ask (e.g. not mid-game).
* If you don’t understand something, talk to the coaches.
* No Cell Phones out in the locker rooms (except for team music). They should be packed away.
* Keep emotions in check, support your teammates. Positive over Negative feedback
* School is a must! I want all of you to make the Stormhawk awards
* Practice Jerseys: colors don't mean anything; I may rotate them. Will use them to create practice groups
* Pre-game focus, be ready to go 10 minutes before a game. Expect coaches to speak before and after games.
* No Swearing and do not talk back. It will not be tolerated.
* Manage your own gear, bring a water bottle to all events.
* You will get more out of this if you commit to the team.
* You have a responsibility to the team, play your part, be a good teammate.
* Be creative/dynamic.
Lower Level Notes:
* Tie your own skates
Checking Level Notes:
* Checking is to remove a player from the puck, not blow someone up
* Check in practice, but be respectiful of your teammates
* Never check from behind
Parent Notes
* See player notes
* Players need to communicate with coaches
* Attendance: 45 minutes before a game, 30 minutes before a practice.
* Discipline: If your player gets in trouble, I will take action and will talk with the parents at the earliest possibility.
* Playing time:
+ We run 3 sets of forwards and 4 defensemen with 13 skaters
+ Injury, penalties, making sure we have 4-D on the ice, and discipline: will change/interrupt playing time. The coaches will do their best to normalize it as soon as we can.
+ Last 2 minutes: if we are down by a goal or two, coaches may put players on the ice where we feel we can get back into the game. This doesn't always mean it's the best players, it could be a player that is working hard that game, etc.
+ Power Plays will just be normal lines, we will not have a power play line or a penalty kill.
+ Goalies can be pulled, sometimes to spark the team.
* Position Rotation:
+ We work to put players in positions to be successful
+ We like to keep players in specific positions during a game. e.g. we have 8 forwards, I may run 3 sets of wings and 2 centers.
+ We expect players to try all position
+ We look at Skill, Effort, Desire
+ A goalie will play the whole game (scrimmages are different)
* Scrimmages:
+ We will try different things
+ Goalies will split the game
* I keep stats and information on the players to help them improve, I will not be posting them.
* We need a locker room attendants, there will be a rotation.
* Please use Common Sense (talking with ref's, other teams, etc)
* Volunteer info
+ Assistant coaches
+ Team Mgr, Scrimmage Mgr, Treasure, Video
* Practice plans:
+ I will have a plan for 90% of our practices
+ Will include goalie specific training
+ Will include Edge work
+ We like to keep the players moving, and will pull out for instruction as needed
* Safety is a focus for the coaching staff. We will error on the side of caution
* Overall: I'd really like to grow our players to improve and love the game of hockey
Coaches Notes
* Don't assume other coaches will be there, please make sure to ask and inform. Always looking for 2 to 4 coaches a practice.
* Communication is key
* I plan to publish a practice plan (shoot for 90% of the practices), sometimes the day of, that we use as a base for that practice. It can change
* It is expected that we adjust practices as we go: a drill isn't working - we change it, want to focus on something else - we change it, players aren't focused - we skate :)
* I like to get the practice going right away with the Bobby Orr drill, as soon as a coach jumps on the ice, I like to start playing for 5 minutes.
* We will focus on core skating and give the goalie focused time every practice
* I like to break the ice up into different stations. Goal is to get more players skating drills
* In general, I like to keep the players moving. It's up to us coaches to pull players out if they need instruction or stop the drill if it's not being run right.
* Player responsibilities and roles on the ice
+ Center is the third D
+ Enter the zone wide and in a triangle
+ If you skate to center ice with the puck, just keep going.
+ Don’t bunch up
+ Don’t throw the puck up the ice
+ No fancy moves if you are the last player back.
+ Cover for each other D/W interchange.
+ Protect the puck
+ Use your body
+ Penalties happen, but there are good and bad ones.
